Golden Plover

golden plover

In the countryside the arrival and departure of certain animals and birds, signals the changing of the seasons. For me the arrival of Golden Plover is always a sign of impeding Winter.

Last Saturday while out walking,on the farm at Harrowden, I heard the familiar liquid notes of “too-ee” and looking up, saw a flock of Golden Plover, high overhead. These Winter visitors always come back to the same fields on the farm. They are then a common sight till March time either on the wing or resting on the ground facing into the wind.

Golden Plover are a distinctive shape in the air, with swept back wings, flying fast with precision. They have a very varied diet of worms, insects, snails and berries.
